Poultry entrepreneurs have raised the price of dressed chicken by Rs 15 per kg effective from Monday, citing low supplies.
With the fresh adjustment, wholesale price of chicken in capital has reached Rs 250 per kg. Similarly, price of live chicken has increased by Rs 10 per kg to Rs 185 per kg.
A joint meeting of based poultry farmers, entrepreneurs and wholesalers based in the capital took the decision. Janga Bahadur BC, president of National Chicken Sellers´ Association, said they had to raise prices due to low supply.
“Though the demand of chicken normally goes down from mid-July to mid-August, as many people do not consume meat during the holy month of Shravan, we had to raise prices after supply dwindled,” added BC.
According to the association officials, demand for chicken generally drops by 10 to 15 percent during summer. “Still, we have been failing to meet the demand because of low supplies,” they said.
Daily consumption of chicken in the capital hovers around 200,000 kg to 250,000 kg.
Retailers in the capital source chicken from local farms as well as from Dhading, Kavre and Chitwan, among others.
