New Baneshwor area tense as ethnic groups stage demo

The surrounding areas of the Constituent Assembly (CA) building in New Baneshowr have become tense on Saturday afternoon, with activists from various ethnic communities staging demonstrations to press for their demand.

The demonstrations, spearheaded by Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN), come hours ahead of May 27, when the deadline for the promulgation of the new constitution by CA expires. 

Demonstrators have been shouting slogans demanding that the nine-point pact earlier reached between NEFIN and the government be implemented. They have demanded that the state be restructured based on single ethnic identity and have said a new constitution without federalism would not acceptable to them.

A large number of security personnel have been deployed at the site. Traffic movement has come to a halt due to the demonstrations. 

Also, the major political parties and  have shifted their meeting venue from CA building to the prime minister’s official residence in Baluwatar due to the ethnic communities’ demonstrations in the area.

ढुंगा प्रहार गर्ने ५ महिला र १ पुरुषलाई प्रहरीले नियन्त्रणमा लिएको छ भने अहिले अवस्था सामान्य रहेको र सुरक्षा व्यवस्था कडा पारिएको जिल्ला प्रहरी कार्यलय पर्साले जनाएको छ ।

स्वायक्त मधेश प्रदेशको माग गर्दै संयुक्त मोर्चाले आव्हान गरेको बन्दका कारण तराईको जनजीवन प्रभावित भएको छ ।

Prakash Dahal atop Everest

 Prakash Dahal, son of UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has successfully climbed Mt. Everest at 8:00 am on Saturday morning.A 15-member team led by Prakash leading the Lumbini Mt. Everest Peace Campaign had left towards Mt. Everest with Lumbini´s soil and national flag one and a half months ago.Team leader Prakash flew Nepal´s national flag and the party´s flag on the summit, said former chairman of the Nepal Mountaineering Association Ang Chhiring Sherpa.Those climbing today are team members Krishna KC, Yubaraj Dulal, Saral Poudel, Shiva Dangi, Maheswor Funyal, and Madan Chudal whereas other Sherpa assistants climbing Everest were Nimakanchha Sherpa, Furba Chhiring Sherpa, Pemba Chhiring Sherpa, Gyaljen Sherpa, Lakpanurbu Sherpa, Kaji Sherpa and Gyaljen Sherpa.

Peace returning to Terai as armed groups come to talks

 Law and order is coming to Saptari which is regarded as the most sensitive district in security point of view in the past. 

The terrible situation in the rural areas has been coming down to normalcy. 

Until a few months ago, one could hear abduction, looting, and donation terror from early in the morning, but the situation is now comparatively better, locals say.

The people of Saptari are now feeling peace after the government increased administrative activity and held talks with Terai armed groups, say locals. 

Madhes was much plagued after Jay Krishna Goit group rebelling from UCPN (Maoist) in 2061 BS declared armed war for a separate state.

Displaced locals have been returning to villages and hilly people have also started to come to Terai but it will take time for them to stay in the villages, said locals. 

Saptari SP Ganesh Bahadur Thapa says police has increased patrol in villages, police posts have been established, criminals have been taken action and arms are seized.

"We are working with high alert even if situation has somewhat improved. We are engaged in crime control by minutely analyzing the information received", said SP Thapa.

Govt to bear damages during Tharu protests

The government has decided to pay compensation to physical damages caused at Nawalparasi-based Tharu museum and vehicles during Tharu protests. 

A four-hour meeting between Tharu Struggle Committee and government at peace ministry reached to this agreement on Tuesday. 

However, the meeting will continue on Wednesday after the government failed to address the committee´s demand of three provinces in Tarai. 

Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula and Ministers—Barsha Man Pun, Mahendra Yadav and Radha Gyawali—had represented the government in the meeting.

Dozen arrested for looting Humla monastery

Police has arrested a dozen people allegedly involved in the looting of an ancient Budddha statue from a monastery in Humla six months ago. 

The 33 centimeter tall 2.5 kg statue was looted by armed robbers from the monastery at Bargaon-5 after overpowering the priest and other attendants. 

Those arrested by Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) are Narendra Lama, Kamal Lama, Lok Bahadur Edi, Shankar Shahi, Pratap Rokaya, Dhan Bahadur Baral, Karma Tamang and Kamal Rana. They were directly involved in the loot, the police said. 

Meanwhile, Lokendra Shahi, Shankar Sharma, Nirman Buda and Kumar Lama were arrested allegedly for re-looting the statue and cash from those who had pillaged the antique from the monastery.

Indigenous leaders stick to their demands

 Lawmakers and leaders of different political parties belonging to indigenous communities decided to go for struggle if their demands were not addressed in Tuesday´s talks with the government team.

Organizing a meeting today, the leaders and lawmakers have decided to remain firm on the demands of federal states with single ethnic identity, rights to self-determination, preferential rights, self-autonomous provinces and others as floated by the Indigenous Nationalities Joint Struggle Committee. 

Chairman of Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) Raj Kumar Lekhi said decision has been made to go for further protest if positive results were not yielded during the talks. 

The NEFIN is likely to announce its protest programs today itself if the dialogue was not positive, Lekhi added.

During the meeting, indigenous leader Parshuram Tamang, Lekhi, Maoist lawmaker Suresh Ale Magar and others were present.
