PM Of Nepal Is About to quit after July 22

CPN-UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal has said that Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai would be forced to quit his post, following the constitutional crisis in the country and public pressure to that end.

Talking to media persons at Bharatpur this morning, the former prime minister claimed that Dr Bhattarai would not be able to prepare necessary laws for holding fresh elections to the Constituent Assembly ( CA) within July 22, the deadline set by the Elections Commission, and then would be compelled to resign from the post.

"The Nepali Congress should get an opportunity to lead the next government as per the agreement reached among the political parties on May 3", said Nepal.

He added that the CA was dissolved due to a violation of the past agreements by the Maoists.

Stating that federal structure based on single ethnic identity was not possible, he claimed that increasing intra-party dispute in the UML would be settled on the basis of talks and discussions.

Leader Nepal was here to address the Narayani zonal-level party cadres´ gathering at Bharatpur.

The gathering is expected to discuss on the issues of state restructuring, country´s latest political developments and possible way out to the existing political crisis in the country.

Over 300 representatives are taking part in the gathering.

Businessmen shut Lahan for third day

Lahan bazaar of Siraha district remained shut for the third consecutive day on Saturday over the thrashing of three local businessmen by police.

The market, all educational institutions and factories were closed due to the indefinite strike organized at the call of the local businessmen. They have also threatened to obstruct vehicular movement along the Lahan section of the East-West Highway if their demands are not addressed within 24 hours.

The locals have demanded that five plainclothes policemen who on last Wednesday thrashed the three businessmen be suspended immediately.

“We issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the police on Saturday,” said Sunil Kumar Mahato, Siraha chapter president of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI). “If our demands are not addressed within 24 hours, we will take to the streets. Our agitation will more stringent.”

The local businessmen who were originally demanding only the suspension of the five plainclothes policemen have now put forward another demand: Siraha Police Chief SP Rajesh Kumar Lal Karna also be suspended for using force against peaceful protests on Friday for his failure to initiate talks with the locals.

On Wednesday, Sunil Kumar Sah, the proprietor of Hotel Bishal in Lahan, Bishal Kumar Sah, Siraha district chairman of Builders´ Association and Nirash Chaudhari, former Siraha chapter president of FNCCI were beaten up and arrested by police.

They were released on Thursday after the locals took to the streets protesting the arrests. After being freed, Sunil told Republica that he was thrashed and arrested, along with Nirash and Bishal, when he sought search-warrant from plain-clothes policemen including constables Santosh Kumar Jha, Binod Kumar Yadav and Asarfi Yadav.

However, SP Karna has rejected the allegation that plainclothes police thrashed the locals. “Police had gone to the hotel to search for a criminal. But, the locals instead attacked the police,” Karna said. “The policemen just defended themselves.”

Another Nepali in death row in UAE

At a time when local media is abuzz with reports of Amar Bahadur Bam, who has been slapped death penalty on charge of murdering an Indian businessman in Dubai, another Nepali national is awaiting death penalty in a UAE prison for murdering his compatriot in January 2009.

It is learnt that a local court in Sharjah has given death sentence to Durga Bahadur Sunar of Chitre VDC-5 in Parbat district for murdering Ganesh Bahadur Basnet of Hansponsa VDC-2 in Sunsari district. The verdict is to be implemented by September.

According to a diplomatic communication made by the UAE´s Foreign Ministry to Nepal government, the court has given September deadline to Sunar family to make an agreement with the victim´s family for amnesty as per UAE laws. Sunar,30, can walk free if the victim family agrees in writing to pardon him.

Foreign Ministry officials, who have been taking initiatives to save Sunar from death row, said the possibility to save Sunar is slim as they have so far been unable to trace the victim´s family. "Though we are in contact with Sunar family, we have not yet been able to contact the victim´s kin," said officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Late Basnet is found to have acquired his citizenship certificate and passport from Sunsari district. Both Sunar and late Basnet were working at Al Shirawi Equipment Company in Sharjah in the UAE.

As per the request of the ministry, the District Administration Office in Sunsari had sent separate teams to locate Basnet family in their original home address in Hansponsa VDC. "But our repeated efforts to help establish contact with both Sunar and Basnet family have failed. Sunar can be saved only if the victim family agrees to pardon him," the officials said.

Sunar family has agreed even to provide ´blood money´ if the victim´s family demands. "Time is running out as not even three months remain for the execution date. We still don´t know the whereabouts of the Basnet family. We are in a dilemma as to what to do next," said Rajendra Kumar Gurung, who hails from Sunar´s village in Parbat.

Sunar visited UAE some nine years ago for employment. "It will be difficult to save Sunar if we fail to trace Basnet family in the next 10-15 days. We need to forward the UAE court the consent of the victim´s family for pardon," foreign ministry officials further said.
