Locals clamp banda in Lahan

Local residents and businessmen have enforced a banda in Lahan, the district headquarters of Siraha, protesting against alleged police atrocities, on Thursday.

They have organized a sit-in on the East-West Highway, bringing transportation to a halt. A clash has erupted at Shahid Chowk between protesters and police after police intervene in the demonstration.

Around 9:30 pm on Wednesday, a group of plain-clothes masked policemen had allegedly assaulted the owner and guests of the local Bishal Hotel in the name of raid.

Siraha police chief Rajesh Lal Karna has, however, denied any wrongdoing by police. .According to Sunil Kumar Sah, manager at the hotel, seven to eight plain-clothes policemen entered the hotel and misbehaved with the guests and hotel employees.

Also among the guests were the chairman of the Construction Entrepreneurs´ Association, Bishal Kumar Sah, and the former chairman of Chambers of Commerce, Nirash Chaudhary.

Police had also detained Nirash, Bishal and Sunil. They were, however, released later the same night following pressure from local businessmen.
