Fifty persons have been injured when a clash broke out between police and demonstrators, who were trying to forcibly shut the highway, in Bastipur of Siraha on Wednesday. Six police personnel are among the injured.
The clash ensued after police intervened in the demonstration on the highway. Locals were staging the demonstration to press for release of eight persons including principal of a higher secondary school, who were all arrested at the court premises Tuesday evening.
Suvash Mahato of Karjanha-4 and Sudip Paswan of Ward No 4 of the same VDC were among the injured in the scuffle. The injured are receiving treatment at the local Phul Kumari Memorial Hospital, Indresh Raut, a local, said.
Additional police force from Siraha, Bandipur and Mirchaiya have been called in and deployed at the clash site. Police have fired 15 shots in air to bring the situation under control.
