7 killed in family dispute

Seven members of a family were killed in a dispute between two brothers reportedly over property inheritance in remote village of Syadi in Bajhang district Saturday evening.

Assistant Sub Inspector at the Syadi Police Post Karna Bahadur Gharti said siblings Gagan BK and Brijit BK, who live together in the dalit settlement of Balkulla in Syadi-9 -- around a two-day trek from the district headquarters -- killed seven persons including their children with khukuris and other sharp weapons following a dispute.

Brijit´s wife Jhankri, three sons -- Rajendra, 8, Karan, 5, and Keshav, 4 -- and daughter Laxmi, two, and Gagan´s son Pawan, 6, and a daughter Pabitra,4, were killed in the brawl. Police held Gagan and Brijit, who were trying to flee after the murder, from near the village. Gharti said the duo has owned up the killings.

Gharti said the duo has not revealed the reason for the bloodshed but said it may be due to dispute over property inheritance. Police, attributing the locals, said that the siblings had a dispute over inherited land for the past few years. "Preliminary investigations show that the murders resulted following a dispute over property inheritance," said Assistant Chief District Officer of Bajhang Mahendra Jung Shah.
