Supreme Court Justice Rana Bahadur Bam, who was fatally shot at by unidentified assailants late Thursday morning, died during the course of his treatment at the Thapathali-based Norvic International Hospital.
The doctors said he could not be saved as he had already suffered massive bleeding by the time he was brought to the hospital. He had received four rounds of shots on various parts of his body including neck, chest and belly.

Motorcycle-borne two assailants opened fire on Bam, while he was returning in his car from the Bangalamukhi temple at around 11:15 am, near the UN Park in Shankhamul, Lalitpur.

His body guard Mahesh Giri and one of his friends, Ram Giri, were also injured in the shooting. Both of them are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The shooters, who were riding a black Pulsar motorcycle, are on the run. The motive behind the attack is not known yet. Pamphlets in the name of Nepalbad NSSR Party have been recovered at the incident site. Police are trying to see if the pamphlets have any connection with the murder.

Police have launched a massive manhunt in search of the fleeing culprits. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Meanwhile, Bam´s body has been sent to the TU Teaching Hospital for post-mortem.

His body will kept at the SC premises on Friday for paying final respects. His last rites will be performed the same day.

The government has appointed a probe committee headed by AIG Kuber Singh Rana to look into the broad daylight murder.

Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has described the incident as an attack not only on judiciary but on the entire state and vowed to bring the criminals to book.

He also said a central security meeting to take place later will discuss measures to ensure special protection for high ranking officials.
